The Mint of Lisbon held an exhibition in 2011 dedicated to the career of the Portuguese sculptor João Duarte.

Born in 1952 in Lisbon, Duarte graduated in Fine Arts – Sculpture in 1978, by the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where he now is Professor of Sculptures and Medals. He is the founder and Director of Research Section Volte Face and Studies - Contemporary Medal in this Faculty and also the founder of Anverso Reverso - Contemporary Medal. João Duarte is considered one of the major references in Portuguese sculpture.
